The following forum posting suggests to use the currently selected transfer syntax instead of the original one when the value "EXS_Unknown" is used for the output transfer syntax parameter: http://forum.dcmtk.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3922
Since this would change the current behavior, it should be checked very thoroughly whether this change has any side effects.
