i tried this with two versions, with the same result (segfault).
here are the respective dcmprscp --version outputs:

a)version 3.5.4 (current stable), normal build without options (other than a
custom install path prefix):
$dcmtk: dcmprscp v3.5.4 2005-12-20 $

both the stable and the snapshot were built under linux (opensuse 11.1) with
gnu c++:
g++ (SUSE Linux) 4.3.2 [gcc-4_3-branch revision 141291]
