Learning DICOM

DICOM is a little complicated. The standard is available from the NEMA, however, it is too long and complicated to just read it right away.

Since there are not many online ressources for learning DICOM either, you may have a look at some books:

  • Biomedical Image Processing (Biological and Medical Physics, Biomedical Engineering: Includes 30 page introductory DICOM chapter from our team, including topics Storage and Query/Retrieve, Application Hosting and DICOM's visualization pipeline. Amazon Link
  • Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM): A Practical Introduction and Survival Guide. A dedicated book about DICOM, written by Oleg S. Pianykh Amazon Link
  • DICOM Structured Reporting: A book by the editor of the DICOM standard, David Clunie, about a sub-area in DICOM called Structured Reporting. If you are interested in this topic, this book is highly recommended. Additionally, it is available online for free (out of print in bookstores). Link to book download page
